Original Chikashige (active circa 1869 - 1882) Japanese Woodblock Print
Kabuki Banzuke, 1881

Comments - Great kabuki triptych featuring a number of actors in character from an assortment of plays. Each figure is carefully identified with a name cartouche, and a banzuke or list runs across the top. At bottom center, a samurai wearing a brown dragon print vest over a purple kimono and armor wields a gun as he looks up with an angry frown. At top left, an elderly warrior with flowing white hair and beard grimaces unhappily as he stares at a yakko or low-ranking servant. At bottom right, a warrior wears a shaggy red wig topped with a fox figurine. A wonderful design with great expressive figures and vibrant color, nicely detailed with touches of burnishing and embossing.

Artist - Chikashige (active circa 1869 - 1882)

Image Size - 13 7/8" x 27 5/8" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail and shown. Three attached panels, backed with paper. A couple small tears at edge. Slight soiling, a few creases, ink bleeding at edges, slight curling. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
