The Battle of Yashima in the Genpei War: Yoshitsune Retrieving His Bow, 1893

Comments - Terrific scene from of the Battle of Yashima between the Minamoto and Taira during the Genpei War. During the fighting on shore, Minamoto no Yoshitsune lost his small bow, and did not want to be laughed at if it fell into enemy hands, so he risked his life to recover it. Plunging his steed through the deep water, Yoshitsune reaches for the bow with his riding crop as it floats atop the undulating waves. At left, Taira warriors in a boats move in to attack him with a hooked pole arms. Beautiful detail in the armor and weapons, with fine bokashi shading in the water. A great, bold depiction of this famous incident in the life of Yoshitsune.
