The God of Hikosan, circa 1844 - 1845 - Interesting scene of a man protecting a child from a crazed nun, who threatens him with a sword. He shields the boy behind his back, thrusting his hand out between himself and the woman as she approaches, staring at him with an expression of hatred. She wears a traditional monk's or nun's mantle over her kimono, and her basket hat and shakuhachi flute rest on the floor behind the child. A blue kimono flutters in the breeze outside, hung from the branch of a tree with rope. A fascinating subject with expressive figures. A great Hiroshige design from this very rare series of vertical oban prints.
