Comments - Handsome kabuki scene of a commoner confronting a samurai dressed as a yamabushi or mountain priest. The commoner kneels at left, holding a small drawstring bag and raising his hand in a pleading gesture, looking up with a slightly worried frown. The samurai regards him with a stern scowl, gripping a bell in one hand and a walking staff in the other. He wears the yamabushi's distinctive brocade sash trimmed with pompoms over a robe patterned with swirling clouds and armor, and unusual sandals atop raised iron prongs for walking through mud or snow. At right, a smiling beauty peers from the open door of a country shrine. A tall pine tree frames an extensive view of the fields in the valley below under a dark night sky. An attractive design with wonderful detail.
