Series; Modern Parodies of Genji, 1863 - 1864
Yume no ukihashi, The End (Taibi): Karukaya Doshin and Ishidomaru, Chapter 54, 1864 - Fine illustration of the young boy Kato Ishidomaru reuniting with his father, who has taken the priesthood. His father was Kato Sayemon Shigeuji, a daimyo of Kyushu, who later fled his station and title and became the priest Karukaya Doshin to escape his jealous wife. His son identified him by a birthmark, but he initially refused to recognize him. Finally, the father relented, but made his son promise to keep the truth from his mother. A terrific scene from the tale showing the young boy pleading with his father, tugging on his robe as the monk scowls at him suspiciously. A beautiful print from the series with fine shading in the background.
