Series; Modern Parodies of Genji, 1863 - 1864
Title Page for Modern Parodies of Genji, 1866 - Attractive kabuki scene of the nursemaid Shigenoi and the young boy Sankichi, who works as a pack horse driver. She discovers that he is the child she was forced to give up at birth, but because of her high position taking care of the Princess Shirabe, she can never be a real mother to him. She smiles down at him fondly as he plays a game of sugoroku, tossing a die to move around the board. A blue-eyed dog sits alertly on a tie-dyed cushion at right, watching the boy play. A poignant image of this mother and son who can never live as family. Nicely detailed with delicate embossing on the white kimono trim and the dog's fur.
