Comments - Fascinating kuchi-e or frontispiece illustration for "How to Become a Literary Scholar," a book by Uchida Roan satirizing the literary world in Japan, published in 1894. The scene shows two beauties greeting a procession of writers riding on donkeys and deer. At left, a man naps a bench at a tea stall, his dreams of scholarly literary fame rising up in a mist from his chest. They include a bust with a memorial wreath nearby, people dancing in a circle, a man rowing a boat across the river, and a building with exotic domes in silhouette. A rare unusual subject with wonderful detail.
