Lord Minamoto Yoritomo Goes to the Capital, 1863

Comments - Terrific illustration of the Shogun Minamoto no Yoritomo's procession on the way to visit the emperor in Kyoto. At lower right, retainers on foot and noblemen on horseback progress along the water's edge, the curving roadway lined with townspeople bowing and watching. A bank of clouds separates the scene from a view of entrance to the emperor's palace at upper left, with Yoritomo kneeling respectfully, the emperor seated on a low platform with a blind shielding a view of his face. A fantastic panoramic view of this historic event, beautifully detailed. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
