Parting after a Short Sleep, 1860

Comments - Attractive triptych depicting courtesans in a teahouse in the early morning. The beauty in the center straightens her hair, a roll of tissues in her mouth and her robes loosely wrapped about her. At left, a young man prepares to leave after spending the night, an attendant helping him on with his striped coat as he stands on the verandah. At right, his sweetheart looks back at him with a longing expression, sorry that they must be parted. At left, another courtesan sits up in bed, smiling at her companion. The courtyard garden beyond is filled with blossoming cherry trees and a few birds flutter across the still dark morning sky. A rare and very early Yoshitoshi design. Beautifully detailed with embossing on the cherry blossoms and white kimono trim.
