The Meiji Emperor's Procession to Osaka Scroll - Interesting scroll featuring a lithograph reproduction of an earlier woodblock depicting the Meiji Emperor's first official visit to Osaka in March 1868. It was considered an important occasion since no Emperor had visited Osaka for hundreds of years. Here the procession arrives at the castle where the Emperor will be staying during his trip. In the center, the Emperor rides in an elegant palanquin topped with a golden phoenix, surrounded by uniformed soldiers and guards. A few noblemen ride horseback or in smaller palanquins. At left, a band plays while the entourage enters the castle through at gateway. A text panel in Japanese and English describes the visit. Modern scroll mounting with cloth borders and black and gold lacquer knobs. An interesting historic scene in a handsome format.
