Illustration of Our Army Defeating Enemies at Songhwan and Taking the Base Away from Asan, 1894 - Interesting image from the Sino-Japanese War of the Japanese army wading across a river to attack the Chinese at Songhwan. At right, a general on horseback surveys the action from atop a hill as soldiers fire a cannon behind him. In the center, troops cover the infantry with rifles as they make their way through the water and onto the shore, where enemies begin fleeing. At top center, an explosion shoots flames and smoke into the air beneath a full yellow moon, moonlight reflected on the water below. An interesting viewpoint, nicely detailed with burnishing in the general's black uniform and soft bokashi shading in the sky and smoke.
