Original Kuniteru II (1829 - 1874) Japanese Woodblock Print
The Ceremony at the Great Temple, 1863

Comments - Intriguing depiction of Oda Nobunaga's memorial service at Daitoku Temple in Murasakino. The great leader Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Nobunaga's loyal retainer, stands in at left with Nobunaga's infant grandson, Prince Samboshi, perched on his shoulder. Hideyoshi supported Prince Samboshi as Nobunaga's successor, with himself as the guardian, a move disputed by Nobunaga's two living sons. In the center, one of the sons has leapt to his feet, ready to challenge Hideyoshi. Samurai and noblemen in court attire sit both inside and outside the temple, which features colorful carvings and scene of the ceilings. Nicely detailed with a burnished scroll pattern on Hideyoshi's black robe. A fascinating historic subject with a handsome setting.
