Moon-viewing Scene from Inaka Genji, 1847 - 1852 - Attractive illustration of moon viewing from the story "Nise Murasaki Inaka Genji" (A False Murasaki and a Country Genji), a parody of the beloved "Tale of Genji" which recounts the adventures of Mitsuuji, the Country Genji. Here, the young man is joined by a group of beauties for an evening of moon viewing and entertainment on a verandah overlooking the water. The young man sits a right holding several sheets of paper, a brush in hand and a writing set on the floor nearby. He smiles happily as he looks at a woman preparing to remove the cloth cover from her koto. At left, a young girl hands an ornate beaded lantern to a beauty on a stepstool, ready to hang the light from the ceiling. A full moon glows softly in the night sky, with red maple leaves peeking above the railing at left. Wonderful detail in the elegant clothing and furnishings.
