Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Elegant Amusements of Eastern Genji, 1854

Comments - Charming scene of Prince Genji watching with amusement as a young princess plays in a miniature boat on a verandah. The toy boat is on wheels, and even has splashing waves painted on the side. The girl smiles shyly, holding her kimono sleeve to her hand as a matron kneels nearby. Genji wears a magnificent black outer kimono patterned with a dragon and spiraling clouds over a pale yellow print robe, which is delicately embossed. At left, a beauty and a young girl carrying a doll pull the boat along by a rope, while another child pushes from the right. A blossoming cherry trees frame a view of the garden beyond, with a stone bridge leading over the water at left and a lantern on the shore at right. An attractive subject with fine color and detail in the elegant fabrics, including light embossing in the white kimono trim.
