First Make-up of the New Year, 1935

Comments - Attractive shin-hanga portrait of a beauty applying her first make-up of the New Year. She holds a red lacquer hand mirror, looking into it intently as she prepares to insert a hairpin into her carefully styled hair. She wears a beautifully shaded red kimono patterned with plum blossoms, with delicately embossed pine sprigs and small white flowers on the gray collar, the fabric slipping off her shoulders. The background is softly shaded with to contrast with her white skin. This image appears on page 167 of the recent book "The Female Image: 20th century prints of Japanese Beauties" by Amy R. Newland and Hamanaka Shinji. A terrific large-format beauty portrait.
