Plum Blossoms at Night, 1853

Comments - Lovely early spring scene of a young nobleman and two beauties enjoying the plum blossoms at night during a stroll. The youth grins happily at his companion at right, gesturing with his folded fan. He wears a dark blue with a hollyhock leaf medallions on the sleeves tucked into pants shaded from pink to blue and bordered with autumn grasses and leaves. The beauty smiles sweetly back at him, her hair pulled into a smooth bun adorned with a comb, ribbons, and floral ornaments. A low garden fence encloses the ancient tree dotted with white plum blossoms and buds, the rugged trunk of the tree rendered in bold calligraphic strokes. A beautiful subject with soft bokashi shading in the sky, and fine detail in the sumptuously patterned fabrics, including embossing in the white kimono collars and trim.
