Ink Battle, 1867

Comments - Amusing kabuki scene of a beauties taking part in an ink battle. In the center, a woman daubs ink in the form of eyeglasses on her companion's face. The companion raises her own brush, ready to retaliate. At right, a courtesan watches with a smile, dressed in a red kimono patterned with splashing waves and an inset with a dragon on it. The courtesan at left wears a striking robe with a design of a palace or temple on the sleeve, tied with a black obi featuring a colorful pheasant and peony blossoms. An interesting subject, nicely detailed with fine line work in the hair and bokashi shading in the night sky.
