Boatman and Courtesan Reading a Letter, 1887

Comments - Intriguing kabuki scene of an elegantly dressed courtesan reading a letter, pausing to look back over her shoulder at a boatman holding an oar. She wears a fantastic kimono with a three dimensional phoenix on it, the bird's feathers trailing down one sleeve. The boatman stares back at her with a frown, wearing a gold and blue striped kimono over a tie-dyed shirt. Autumn reeds and grasses filled the background in soft gray silhouette. Beautifully detailed with extremely fine line work in the hair, embossing on the white kimono collar and trim, and embossing. A handsome design we've never before offered.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 13 7/8" x 27 3/8"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels. Slight paper remnants on reverse at sides from previous mounting. Vertical fold at side of one panel. Slight toning, a few creases, a couple stains. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
