Comments - Inspired by Hokusai’s "The Adonis Plant" and Eiri’s "Models of Calligraphy," this series by Terukata Ikeda was part of a shift in attitudes toward earlier shunga artists' representation of the Yoshiwara. This shift during the westernization of Japan in the late 19th century saw classic depictions of shunga transition to simplified designs featuring only the figures with minimal backgrounds and no text.
