Series; Eight Views of Shiba in the Eastern Capital

Eight Views of Shiba in the Eastern Capital - For his lovely series "Eight Views of Shiba in the Eastern Capital," Hiroshige confined himself to the famous Shiba district of Edo, depicting both popular and less well-known sights during snow and rain, spring and summer, rendered in clear, bright colors. These beautiful views show the area bustling with activity as pedestrians go about their daily lives, strolling through the streets, visiting shrines, or viewing cherry blossoms. Originals from the series are rare, as are these fine old reprints. A lovely and unusual series.

Twilight Snow at Mount Atago; View of the Year-end Fair - Terrific view of the year-end fair at Atagoyama, a favorite site of residents during the Edo era. Visitors crowd the street carrying snow-covered umbrellas as they stroll among the shops, colorful red paper lanterns adding a festive air. A red gate towers over the scene, and the high hilltop location offers a view of rooftops stretching out to the water below.
