Comments - Terrific scene from the kabuki play commonly known as "Kagamiyama." The jealous senior lady-in-waiting, Iwafuji, has plotted the downfall of her junior, Onoe, by exchanging a sandal for a valuable statue in Onoe's care. Here, Iwafuji creates a scene after discovering the zori sandal in place of the statue. She holds the sandal threateningly over her head, glaring angrily at Onoe, who kneels quietly in the center, watching the evil matron out of the corners of her eyes. Onoe's loyal young maid, Ohatsu, watches from the left as she clutches the hand of another attendant, who seems to be falling. From left, the actors include Onoe Kikujiro II as Ohatsu and Sawamura Chojuro V as Iwafuji. A great illustration from this well-known play, with fine detail in the elegant interior setting and a burnished geometric pattern in Iwafuji's black kimono.
