The Great Battle of Yamazaki in the Taiheiki, 1864

Comments - Terrific illustration of the famous Battle of Yamazaki in 1582 in which Toyotomi Hideyoshi defeated Mitsuhide, who had seized power by forcing the great leader Nobunaga to commit suicide. At left, a general on horseback looks out over the battlefield with an angry scowl, wearing a fine suit of armor and a helmet topped with a dragon. At lower right, a messenger kneels on the ground, shouting out his message with his hand outstretched. A wounded samurai kneels beside him, leaning heavily on his bloody sword. The battle continues behind them, with warriors on horseback and on foot, and the banners and standards of approaching troops visible in the distance. Great expressive figures, with wonderful detail in the armor and weapons. A nice subject for a collector interested in the samurai tradition. The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, has this image in its collection.
