Nakamura Shikan as Kazuemon and Ichimura Uzaemon as the Mysterious Old Cat, 1861

Comments - Fantastic image of a mysterious cat witch shrieking in alarm when challenged by a young samurai, shielding her face with her opened fan held high above her head. Pointed furry red ears emerge form the tangle of black hair cascading over her shoulders. The samurai kneels bravely before her, clutching his sword, ready to do battle with the supernatural creature. Wonderfully detailed with fine line work in the hair and embossing white kimono trim, and a subtle burnished pattern in the samurai's black kimono. The actors are Nakamura Shikan IV as Kazuemon and Ichikawa Uzaemon XIII as the cat. A great dramatic design and a terrific choice for a collector interested in Japanese ghost stories.
