Departing for the Front from the Fuji River, 1557, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Terrific image of troops gathered along the edge of the swiftly flowing Fuji River in preparation for battle. At bottom center, a messenger kneels on the rocky shore with his helmet on the ground beside him. At left, a daimyo sitting on a stool glares back at him angrily, gripping a tasseled command baton in his hand. Troops are massed behind the defenses along the shore, some on horseback with standards flying above the bundles of bamboo and wooden shields forming a barrier against enemies approaching from the water. An intriguing scene.

Artist - Yoshitora (active circa 1840 - 1880)

Image Size - 14 3/8" x 29"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels. Small losses at corners, a few small holes, repaired. Slight toning and soiling, a few creases, slight rubbing at edges. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
