The 47 Ronin, Act 2: Scene of the Three Drunks, 1865

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of three drunk yakko or footmen from Act 2 of the play "Chushingura Sugata no Eawase," a tale about the famous 47 ronin. In the center, Kinohei dances about, hoping on one foot and pointing at his companion. Tsurubei looks back at him with a defiant frown, his jaw thrust upwards. At right, Kitsuhei watches his fellow servant with a tight-lipped frown, a cup of sake in his hand and a bottom on the ground nearby. From left, the actors are Ichimura Kakitsu III, Sawamura Tossho II, and Bando Hikosaburo V. A handsome design with a nicely detailed setting outside a home. The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, has this image in its collection.
