Courtesan with a Sword, 1865

Comments - Dramatic kabuki scene of a swordfight taking place in the street before the entrance of a building. At left, a courtesan scrambles backwards on the ground as she waves a sword at her attacker. He grimaces angrily as he raises his own weapon above his head, preparing to strike her. At right, a rogue with bushy hair steps on the blade of another man's sword as he brandishes his own. The right panel features Nakamura Shikan, while the center panel includes Ichikawa Kuzo and Seki Sanjuro. An intriguing image with a handsomely detailed setting, including a large tub of water at far right, and expressive figures.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 28 7/8"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels, backed with paper. Slight toning and soiling, slight rubbing at edges. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
