People of the Five Nations, 1861 - Handsome scene of foreigners in Yokohama attending a party. A woman in a full hoop skirt and ruffled bonnet chats with a man wearing a blue coat over yellow plaid pants and a tall hat with an eagle insignia, who gestures with his hand. At left, a Chinese waiter holds a tray of refreshments. The "Five Nations" of the title refers to the five countries that signed trade treaties with Japan after it was opened to the West in 1858 (America, the Netherlands, Russia, England, and France). An intriguing look at the foreign quarter in Yokohama, nicely detailed.
