Shirabyoshi Dancers and Puzzled Monks

Comments - Intriguing scene from the kabuki play commonly known as "Dojoji" of two shirabyoshi dancers who asked to perform at the dedication of a temple bell at Dojoji Temple. No women have been allowed since the young beauty Kiyo-hime fell in love with a priest. After he rejected her, he fled and hid under a temple bell, while her passion changed her into a fire-breathing serpent that wound around the bell and eventually melted it, killing the priest. Wearing tall yellow men's court caps, the beauties begin to dance, and a strange sensation overcomes the monks. The men exchanges glances, one scratching his head in a puzzled manner. One of the dancers then reveals that she is the spirit of Kiyo-hime. A handsome design with large expressive figures and lively color, bordered with a simulated black lacquer frame. Includes burnishing on the frame and cloth embossing on the white sash.
