Unhappy Encounter, 1852

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from the drama "Sumidagawa tsui no kagamon" showing an unhappy encounter between a young man and a beauty at the Hashimotoya Restaurant. The commoner frowns over his shoulder at the woman as he stretches a towel between his hands, a plaid kimono tossed over the shoulders of his blue and white summer robe. The beauty kneels beside a brazier at right, her head resting against her hand, looking down with a dreamy expression, seemingly unaware of her companion's unhappiness. The woman in the center watches the man with a concerned expression, while a matron and a rather sheepish looking fellow look on at left. The silhouettes of customers and entertainers enjoying the evening can be seen along the shoji walls of the interior rooms. An intriguing scene with wonderful detail in the setting. From left, the actors include an unidentified actor, Onoe Kikujiro II as Mondo nyobo Oyasu, Nakamura Kamenojo I, Sawamura Sojuro V as Suzuki Mondo, and Bando Shuka I as Hashimotoya Shiraito.
