Comments - Interesting kabuki triptych showing a beauty struggling with a woodcutter over a sword wrapped in cloth. The woodcutter sits on a rock, grasping one end of the fabric while the beauty tugs on the other end. He frowns unhappily, an enormous axe leaning against his shoulder and a bundle of brushwood tied to his back. The woman wears an elegant kimono with flowing sleeves trimmed with bows and tassels. Her long hair is pulled into a low ponytail hanging over her back. At left, a woman in exotic robes holds a stroll in one hand, raising her other arm. A blue-green sash flutters about her head, perhaps indicating that she is a deity or possesses special powers. A flock of geese descends for the night past a crescent moon, and a large stone lantern frames the scene at right. A handsome night subject with expressive figure and fine detail in the fabrics.
