Festival to Celebrate the Thirtieth Anniversary of the Transfer of the Capital, 1897 - Handsome scene of a festival procession in 1897 celebrating the thirtieth anniversary of the transfer of the capital to Tokyo. Many different groups are included in the procession, including samurai dressed in full armor, beauties carrying umbrellas, porters carrying heavy chests, and passengers riding in palanquins. At right, a group of yakko or footmen in short black kimono toss two fringed standards back and forth while other porters carry large chests. A large float can be seen in the background at right, topped with a figure and a red banner. Clouds drift across the scene, with blossoming cherry trees along the horizon and a building rising above pine trees. An attractively colored and detailed illustration of this historic event. Although unsigned, the British Museum identifies the artist of this triptych as Chikanobu.
