Scene from Sugawara Denju Tenerai, 1875

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene from the play "Sugawara denju tenerai," a complex story that involves the courtier Sugawara no Michizane (also known as Kan Shojo) and samurai triplets. Sugawara appears in the center, wearing a purple robe patterned with his circular family crest, looking down with an angry frown as a young beauty tugs on his sleeve, looking up in a pleading manner. At right, an elderly woman with white hair leans forward with an eager smile, while the samurai at left scowls. Nice large, expressive figures set against a rich blue-green background, detailed with embossing in the white hair and burnishing in the black court cap. An interesting design.
