Beauty Writing a Farewell Verse, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Handsome scene of the beauty Gio writing a farewell verse on a shoji window, her sister Gijo at her side preparing the ink. Both were popular shirabyoshi dancers in Kyoto, and Gio was a special favorite of Taira no Kiyomori. When Kiyomori fell in love with a new dancer named Hotoke gozen, Gio was forced to retire against her will, becoming a nun along with her sister and mother in Saga. At right, Kiyomori frowns angrily as he watches while an attendant pours him a cup of sake. Hotoke kneels at his side, tilting her head coyly. All the other attendants present keep an eye on the dancers. An interesting subject with wonderful detail in the palace setting and furnishings, includes trays of food and a pineapple on the floor before the group.
