Beauty and Fireman

Comments - Intriguing kabuki triptych depicting a beauty stopping to chat with a fireman as she strolls along the banks of a river in winter. She holds a partially closed umbrella as she looks back over her shoulder at him, her open lips showing the blackened teeth of a married woman. He wears a heavily quilted fireman's robe patterned with large blossoms and an axe emblazoned with flames, a cloth wrapped about his head against the cold air. The commoner at right has a modern, short haircut, and wears a rust coat over a striped kimono. At left, one man wears a brown fur cap over his short hair while his companion sports a traditional topknot hairstyle. The torii gate of a shrine can be seen on the opposite shore, surrounded by snow-covered trees. A handsome design with expressive figures and fine detail in the hairstyles and quilted robe.
