Kawarazaki Gonjuro as Jiraiya, 1862

From an untitled series of half-length actor portraits on battledores

Kawarazaki Gonjuro as Jiraiya, 1862 - Terrific design from a striking Toyokuni III series of actor portraits on battledores. The paddles are used for a traditional Japanese game similar to badminton. Here, the wild-haired rogue and magician Jiraiya, played by Kawarazaki Gonjuro, looks over his shoulder, his short hair forming a halo atop his head with longer locks flowing over his back. He wears a blue kimono patterned with large kanji characters, a heavy brocade robe draped over his shoulders. A colorful ball sits at lower left and a feathered shuttlecock at right. A fantastic image with gorgeous color and detail, from the kabuki play "The Tale of the Gallant Jiraiya."

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14" x 9 5/8" + top margin as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Slight toning and soiling, a few creases at edges. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
