Original Meiji era Japanese Woodblock Print
Beauties and Festival, 1895

Comments - Charming scene of beauties and children who have been attending a festival. The woman at left carries a toddler on her back, the child pulling a wheeled toy festival float on a string. The woman in the center carries a Western umbrella, the height of modern fashion. At right, a young girl in a chrysanthemum kimono smiles over her shoulder at the mother and child. Soft golden yellow clouds separate the figures from a view of the festival procession, with a figure atop a float and banners and flags fluttering in the breeze. A lovely design with beautiful detail, including embossing in the chrysanthemums, burnishing on the black coat, and touches of metallic pigment on the kimono that has oxidized to a gray tone.
