Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Courtesan and Dying Child, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Dramatic kabuki scene of the courtesan Omatsu preparing to commit suicide reaching out towards a man who holds a dying child in his arms. The child hangs limply as the disheveled man frowns back at the beauty, who holds a sword wrapped in a white cloth upright. Two samurai watch at left with unhappy expressions. A wooden rack at upper right holds a row of weapons for fencing practice, and a tobacco case and pipe rest on the floor of the room above. A poignant image with expressive figures and a nicely detailed setting.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14" x 29 3/4"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels, backed with paper. Vertical centerfold in each panel. A few holes, repaired. Slight soiling, a few creases and small stains. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
