Series; A Parody of the Twelve Months, 1852
A Parody of the Twelve Months - Toyokuni III's 1852 series "A Parody of the Twelve Months" pairs kabuki portraits with large floral backgrounds and a verse for each month. The actors appear on a variety of shaped insets, ranging from a fan and a battledore to simple form such as squares or circles. The background are softly shaded and feature oversize blossoms or branches. A small vertical inset in the upper left of each design includes a poem and a small scene. These bold designs are beautifully detailed, with expressive faces and fine line work in the hair, and some include embossing. We've never come across this striking series before. An interesting format and a nice choice for a kabuki enthusiast.
