Beloved Grandchildren of the Old Couple of Takasago, 1890

Comments - Charming scene of a young boy enjoying a walk with his grandparents, the elderly couple from the famous tale of the Takasago Pine, pulling his pet turtle along on a string. He smiles happily as the elderly woman points out several cranes flying overhead, a lucky sign. At right, a woman looks up from working at a loom, her hair protectively wrapped in a cloth and her sleeves tied out of the way with a red sash. Another child peers out the window beside her. Plum trees bloom on the far shore of a river, and a golden glow spreads along the horizon. A lovely early spring subject with wonderful detail in the figures and soft shading in the sky. A rarely seen Chikanobu triptych.
