by Hiroshige (1797 - 1858) and Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)
Series; The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido by Two Brushes
Oiso: Soga Juro and Oiso no Tora - Attractive design from a collaborative Tokaido series by Hiroshige and Toyokuni III. In the foreground, Toyokuni III depicts Soga Juro, the elder of the two Soga Brothers, looking down with a worried, unhappy expression, his hands clasped before him. At right, his sweetheart, the courtesan Oiso no Tora, uses a tissue to wipe clean a comb, watching her companion with dismay, her mouth slightly agape. The sleeves of her red kimono are tied back with a purple sash, and her hair is styled in a looped ponytail. Above, Hiroshige shows a view of Oiso, with the village at lower right and pines and what look like stone markers dotting the sloping hillside. Nicely detailed with embossing in the white kimono trim. A variant edition with a colored background.
