Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Sharing a Letter, 1852

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of a woman eagerly sharing a long letter with a male visitor. She leans forward at left, offering him the partially unrolled message in her outstretched hand. A smiling young girl tugs on his hand, urging him to take the letter as he looks down with a solemn frown. The beauty kneeling at right seems distraught, resting her head against the slender pipe held in her hand. The room is beautifully detailed with shelves holding fine lacquer boxes at left and a wicker basket of cherry blossoms in the scroll niche behind the trio. An intriguing subject.
