Comments - Fantastic scene from the kabuki play "Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami," which features three triplets named Matsuomaru (Pine), Umeomaru (Plum), and Sakuramaru (Cherry). The brothers become the victims of divided loyalties following the treacherous downfall of their sponsor, Sugawara, at the hands of Matsuomaru's employer, Shihei. This dramatic print shows Matsuomaru guarding the gate to Shihei's palace, confronted by his brothers. A furious Shihei rages from on top of a cart, pointing with a wooden staff. An incredible design from this famous play, and a great choice for a kabuki enthusiast.
