Princess Tamaori - Handsome design from a series illustrating famous women in Japan who were known for their loyalty and wisdom. These celebrated beauties are shown in scenes from daily life, with an inset cartouche filled with text detailing their virtues. Here, the lovely Princess Tamaori spends her day making fans after the death of her husband, the noted warrior Taira no Atsumori, who died at a tragically young age during the Battle of Ichi-no-Tani. Wearing a lovely kimono patterned with colorful blossoms, she leans over a low round table, carefully folding a paper fan, her tools and materials scattered on the floor around her. A cloud-like border separates a design of a large fan painted with kanji characters. A charming image from a rarely seen Kuniyoshi series.
