Comments - Fantastic scene from the kabuki play "Higashiyama sakura zoshi" (The Higashiyama Storybook), based on a true story. A local mayor named Asakura Togo (the real-life Kiuchi Sogoro) petitioned the shogun directly for tax relief for his town, bypassing the crooked governor Hotta Masanobu. As a result of his illegal act, both he and his wife were sentenced to die, as well as their children. Here, Asakura Togo is hung from a tree, kicking his feet as he struggles against the rope around his neck, grimacing in pain. His young son reaches up in vain, trying to help his father. His wife Omine kneels at left in mute anguish, a samurai restraining her as he tries to reach her husband. Flames rise from a brazier on a stand behind her, and at right, another woman smiles coyly at the foot of the hangman. Onoe Kikujiro II plays Omine Ichikawa Kodanji, Nakayama Ichizo portrays the samurai at left, and Ichikawa Kodanji IV portrays Asakura Togo. An incredible image from this famous tale, with poignantly expressive figures and an atmospheric night setting.
