Original Kunisada II (1823 - 1880) Japanese Woodblock Print
Courtesan with a Cat Figurine, 1866

Comments - Intriguing kabuki scene of a courtesan holding a small golden cat figurine on purple silk in her outstretched hand, smiling as she stands atop the swords of the sumo wrestlers flanking her. She stands atop a light blue floral robe tossed on the ground, wearing a red striped outer robe bordered with purple and white checks over a matching kimono, tied with a geometric print obi. Trees and rooftops in dark silhouette line the horizon beneath the night sky. Includes burnishing on the black kimono and black kimono collars. A fascinating subject, beautifully detailed, with fine bokashi shading and strong wood grain impression in the background.

Artist - Kunisada II (1823 - 1880)

Image Size - 14" x 28 7/8"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels. Slight paper remnants on reverse from previous backing. A few small holes, repaired. Slight soiling, a few small spots and creases. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
