Playing Music, 1851

Comments - Handsome scene from the play "Higashiyama Sakura Zoshi" of the lady-in-waiting Tamakazura holding a reed pipe called a sho while at left, Ashikaga Yoshihisa plays a hand drum hanging from a cord around his neck. He wears a blue patterned tunic over a red floral kimono and checked pants, with butterfly wings above his back. At right, Ashikaga Jiro no Kimono smiles happily at the beauty as he strikes a pose with his folding fan above his head. A row of musicians playing shamisen and chanters sits on a low platform behind the actors on stage. From left, the actors are Bando Takesaburo I, Iwai Kumesaburo III, and Onoe Kikujiro II. An interesting design, nicely detailed, also in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Image Size - 14" x 19 3/4"
