Father and Son Suicides, 1879

Comments - Unusual kabuki scene depicting a father and son about to commit suicide, each holding a small dirk with the blade wrapped in cloth. Behind each of them stands a second, a samurai appointed to behind them after the seppuku is performed. At right, the father glares angrily at the matron in the center, who attempts to intervene, throwing her hands out in alarm. Ichikawa Danjuro appears as the woman. An intriguing subject, beautifully detailed with burnishing on the matron's black outer robe and embossing on the two white kimono.

Artist - Chikashige (active circa 1869 - 1882)

Image Size - 14" x 28" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels. Small hole, tiny loss at edge, repaired. Slight soiling, a few creases and small marks. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
