Young Soga Brothers, 1863

Comments - Terrific kabuki scene from the play "Sandai-banashi Koza no Shinsaku," one of the many dramas based on the true story of the Soga Brothers. At left, Ichimura Kakitsu IV plays Hakoomaru (the young Soga Goro) while Sawamura Tossho II appears as Ichimanmaru (the young Soga Juro). The young samurai seem very agitated, throwing out their hands in alarm. In the center, Ichikawa Kuzo III portrays the strong man Kobayashi Asahina, easily recognizable by his red "monkey makeup" and flared sideburns. He, too, seems upset, looking up with a worried expression. The beauties are Bando Mitsugoro VI as Usami (center), Onoe Kikujiro II as Naginoha Gozen, and Nakamura Kamenojo I as Kusumi. An elegant mansion in a snow-covered landscape can be seen behind the group. An attractive design with large colorful figures, nicely detailed with fine line work in the hair and expressive faces. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
