Sosaku Hanga - The sosaku hanga or creative print movement in Japan began in the early part of the twentieth century. Unlike the traditional collaborative woodblock printing process utilizing a separate artist, carver, and printer along with a publisher, the sosaku hanga movement emphasized artist involvement in designing, carving, and printing the blocks himself, as the sole creator of his work. The movement gained popularity following World War II, earning international acclaim and expanding subject matter to include abstraction. Today most contemporary Japanese print artists design, carve, and print their woodblocks themselves, continuing the vibrant creative tradition established with ukiyo-e. Sosaku hanga prints encompass a wide range of subjects and expressive artistic styles, and are a great choice for a collector interested in modern and contemporary prints.

Eighty-eight Sacred Places in Shikoku - This intriguing sosaku hanga series by Kadowaki Shunichi depicts the "Pilgrimage to the Eighty-eight Sacred Places of Shikoku." A journey of nearly one thousand miles, the pilgrimage route encircles the island of Shikoko, and includes many of the temples founded by the revered Buddhist monk Kukai, known as Kobo Daishi after his death. Shunichi animates the scenes with energetic line work and patches of color, creating lively subjects in his own unique style. He uses small calligraphic strokes to enliven surfaces and give an appearance of texture to stones, tree bark, or even the ground. Designed, carved, and printed by the artist between 1966 and 1969, this fascinating series presents a modern take on the traditional pilgrimage. Each print includes a label on reverse in Japanese with the name and number of the temple. Works by Kadowaki Shunichi are rarely seen in the market.
