The Delivery of Food for the Troops at Otaka in Owari Province, 1875

Comments - Great image of samurai delivering food for the troops at Otaka in Owari Province. In the center, a general rides a shaggy horse or mule, directing his men with a tasseled command baton as he looks over his shoulder at the clouds of smoke billowing up into the night sky from beyond the mountains. At lower right, two warriors gesture with their hands as other men climb up the hill behind them, smoke rising from their torches. One holds a red standard emblazoned with the three hollyhock leaf crest of the Tokugawa clan. At left, a train of animals laden with supplies files through the entrance gate of a castle. A handsome design with expressive figures and a striking setting, with a dusting of mica across the top of the left panel. We've never before seen this Yoshitoshi triptych design.

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 28 1/4" + margins as shown
